Introducing our Mothers Day collaboration ‘Sunflowers’ 🌻🌻🌻

We have teamed up with our family friends and fellow creatives to bring to you the perfect Mothers Day gift. Or treat for yourself to brighten up going into the cooler months.

@lynaire_kibblewhite_goldsmith designs and hand makes bespoke jewellery in Hamilton.
Lynaire is a lifelong family friend and came up with the sunflower pendant after a visit to the farm for our wedding and seeing the sunflowers that were a feature in our cover crop. She has designed and hand crafted a silver sunflower pendant which can be worn on any chain or bracelet, as well as having the option to purchase two as a set of earrings.

@rachkibblewhite (Lynaires Daughter) is an artist and musician and is now based over in Melbourne. She creates the most amazing prints! Her flower people series are our favourite and ‘A handful Of Sunflowers’ features as the perfect card in our pack.

Sunflowers for us are a nod to our vineyard and using regenerative practices to care for our soil. They are a staple flower in our spring cover crop mix as they bring in a diverse range of insects, improve soil structure through their root systems and help increase soil fungi and overall biology with the rest of the cover crop.

The gift pack also has a bottle of our Georgette Pinot Noir as a symbol of Mother’s Day and connection to the land.

It is super super limited, with only 336 bottles produced. It was made in 2023 when we found out we were having a baby. We made it to give us a tradition and celebrate Georgette, and will continue to make this in small quantities and only in outstanding years.

This wine is Pinot Noir farmed organically and super low yielding from our friends across the river. Clone 777, with 10% whole bunch and the rest whole berry. Again like all our reds very gentle handling and extraction. Giving a very graceful wine that we are proud of and know that you will enjoy.

It’s a wine we hope to put a few cases away and open on her milestones.

Our Racecourse block Sauvignon Blanc is one of the very first wines we crafted with the goal to make Sauvignon GREAT again alongside our Sauvignon Pet Nat.

Hand harvested Sauvignon was gently whole bunch pressed, settled lightly and sent straight to neutral barriques for the magic to happen. Wild fermentation with indigenous yeast from the farm followed by malolactic fermentation then left to rest until the next summer before being bottled.

A wine with a sense of place and craft. A staple in our line up.

The label is a drawing of the original stable on Marathon Downs reflecting the generations of the Barnes family that have worked on the farm before us.

Introducing our Up the Hill Chardonnay. Beautiful clone 548 was hand harvested from our neighbours hill site overlooking the farm. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented. Then aged in barrel and on lees for 10 months before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered. Super limited 700 bottles.

With all of the growing season jobs caught up on we found time to collect native flax and cabbage tree seed from indigenous plants alongside the Starborough creek which runs through our vineyard blocks .

The seed will be grown up at the nursery so we can add it to our native tree plantings on the farm 💚

Warmer spring days on the farm mean that the old Elderflower tree out the back is flowering 🌞

The perfect excuse to whip up some elderflower and lime cordial which is perfect after a hard days yakka or as a mixer 🍹

Here’s my recipe

10x Elderflower heads
2-3 Limes other citrus also works
750ml water
About 40g citric acid
About 1.25kg sugar

Trim off the big stalks off flowers and rinse in cold water then place in the water and add chopped up citrus 🍊
Bring slowly to the boil , then place lid on and let it steep overnight.
Drain off using muslin cloth then bring to the boil again with sugar and citric (I just add these to taste) keep stirring until dissolved. Then let it simmer for 5 minutes and scrape off any foam .
Then decant into sterilised bottles (we like to reuse wine bottles).
Enjoy!!

Whilst things are quieting down in the vineyard as we prep for harvest, there is still plenty to do on the farm.

Flushing the Ewes has been a priority at the moment to ensure they are healthy and fertile with lambing season sneaking up quickly.

It’s basically a bottomless brunch all day every day for the gals at the moment with grain, baleage and Sorghum on the menu 🌾🐑
Before they head to the vines for some winter grazing (after harvest of course) .
